Our group is dedicated on ambient and source characterization of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and investigation of their impacts on regional air quality and global climate. We are setting up a gold standard VOCs laboratory with cutting-edge analytical instruments and world-class standard operating procedures for sampling, analysis, and quality assurance. The results are applied to identify the source and chemical pathway, improve numerical model, assess control strategy, and support policy implementation.
Prof. Gu participated several international research campaigns in China, USA, South Korea, and Brazil on regional air quality. He developed airborne instrument platform and high resolution emission flux measurement technique to improve emission model and accuracy of VOCs source characterization.
Prof. Gu improved satellite retrieval and inverse modeling algorithm to reduce uncertainties in Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emission estimation. The results were applied to investigate the temporal-spatial distributions of NOx emission in China and assess the government control policies.
