Post Date: 3 July 2025 Boat Eco-Tour in North Lantau Marine Park
A group of 7 ENVR staff and 16 ENVR students participated in the Boat Eco-Tour on 7 and 28 June, respectively, visiting the North Lantau Marine Park, organized by the Airport Authority Hong Kong. This marine park is the eighth marine park in Hong Kong, covering a 2,400-hectare sea area and is one of the main mitigation measures committed in the Environmental Impact Assessment Report and Environmental Permit for the expansion of Hong Kong International Airport into a Three-runway System.
During the trip, the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) organized engaging talks focused on the ecology of cetaceans in Hong Kong and the unique ecosystem of the North Lantau Marine Park. Participants gained valuable insights into AAHK’s marine ecology and fisheries enhancement strategies, exploring a range of initiatives such as artificial reef deployment, eco-enhanced seawall, shellfish reef deployment, coral transplantation as well as fish restocking.
They also had the chance to observe Hong Kong’s resident cetaceans -- the Chinese White Dolphin.
This eco-tour provided invaluable opportunity for our staff and students to deepen their understanding of the local marine ecology and explore a real-world case study on how AAHK balances economic development with environmental conservation. We extend our sincere gratitude to AAHK for facilitating this enlightening experience. |
